How Does Scotchgard Work on Carpets?
Published on Monday, 12 October 2015

Scotchgard is the easy answer when you are looking for a product that will help you keep the carpets clean and protected against nasty spills of a variety of food products or drinks. It makes carpet cleaning much easier as you will barely have to put any effort into it. By using it efficiently you can replace hours spent scrubbing with just a few minutes spent over one spot with a moist cloth, or even just a swipe or two with the vacuum cleaner. With scotchgard you will have to worry much less about our guests being careless with the wine glasses, or how active and unruly your pet is and how that might lead to an ‘accident’ or two.

Scotchgard is a product that was discovered accidentally back in 1952 and perfected in 1973 when the original recipe was modified to contain fewer toxins that usually fill the carpet they are supposedly trying to protect with dangerous chemicals. The original key ingredient, perfluorooctane sulfonate, was replaced with perfluorobutanesulfonic acid, and, as dangerous as that sounds, it provides for a better protective product. What scotchgard does is cover your carpet or rug’s surface 2-treatment_600x400with an oil and water repelling shield that protects its fibres from stains sinking in. This means an easier job for you when you push that coffee cup off the table.

The product’s specifics lie in its main function: its chemicals sink into each and every fibre it has been sprayed on, and prevent a variety of fluids from entering the fibres and sticking to them like glue. Of course, that is a temporary defence system. When you spill that black coffee or red wine, you have to take action as soon as possible – even with scotchgard, carpets are not impervious to stains, and the longer a stain remains on the carpet, the more likely it is for it to stay there. Scotchgard will only help with carpet and rug cleaning if you do something about the stain, it does not3-stain_600x398 completely repel the substance trying to stain it.

The best way to use scotchgard is by using it on your rugs and carpets and taking out the cleaning tools and products if an accident happens. This will save you a trip to the store for more expensive and likely toxic carpet cleaners, or the need to hire a professional cleaner to do the job for you. You don’t need to be a dedicated cleaner to repair the damage done on your favourite carpet with scotchgard around, but you still have to work around its limitations. You cannot simply let the stain linger and deal with it whenever you feel like it – if you want an immaculate carpet you still have to work for it, but with scotchgard you will work much less.

Scotchgard doesn’t just work on carpets and rugs, you can use it for your upholstery as well, so you don’t have to worry about buying a product that will only be useful for4-safe carpets_600x400 your floors. You are investing in a product that can work on many surfaces which you fear that might get stained with something hard to remove. The upholstery cleaning you will need to practice will be kept to the absolute minimum.

In summary, scotchgard protects against, and it does not render your carpets immune to, stains. You spray it and leave it, and if there is an accident, react to it before it becomes a stubborn stain to take your time and frustrate you during house cleaning. If you want a clean home, you still have to work for it, but with this product the effort you spend will be much less than the usual.
